DUC – Dedicated to Wetland and Wildlife Conservation
When people think of wetlands, many think of waterfowl. Wetlands across Canada provide critical habitat for the life cycles of ducks, geese, swans and many other waterfowl species. But these wetland habitats also support approximately 600 species of wetlands plants, animals and insects and benefit people too.
Unfortunately, wetland loss continues in Canada. As much as 70 per cent of Canada’s original wetlands have been lost in some areas of the country. That’s why Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) works to conserve, restore and manage Canada’s wetlands for waterfowl, other wildlife and people.
With more than 65 years of experience and 7,100 established habitat projects across the nation, DUC is Canada’s leading expert in wetland and wildlife conservation.
Wetland and waterfowl conservation is also an international effort – waterfowl migrate great distances, water flows over borders, and natural areas flourish across countries. DUC works with partners from Canada, the United States, and Mexico through the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP) and related projects, to conserve wetlands across North America.
Canada's landowners have a direct influence on the land they work. Many waterfowl species nest in the dry upland areas surrounding wetlands. To be effective, DUC must work with landowners to show that waterfowl conservation holds important benefits for them and to establish land-use practices that benefit both agriculture and habitat.
Guided by cutting-edge science and environmental and wetland research, DUC will continue to work to conserve wetlands across Canada. Learn more about how you can help conserve Canada's wetlands today!
